OUR STORY
We didn't start with a business plan. We started with a problem we couldn't ignore.
It started with growing concerns about the products we used every single day. Here's the whole story of how OraNorth came to be…
THE FOUNDER
The plastic was hiding in plain sight.
Hi, I'm Alex. The conversation around cleaner living was everywhere. Food. Water. Household products. Yet oral care was almost always left out. Experts kept saying that reducing unnecessary exposure starts with the products we use every single day. We agreed. But we couldn't understand why one of the products we put in our mouths every morning and every night was rarely part of the conversation. So I started looking closer at my own routine.
Then I picked up my toothbrush. I'd used a bamboo one for years, believing it was plastic-free. The handle was bamboo. The bristles were still nylon—a plastic. Like many plant-based toothbrushes, it wasn't as plastic-free as I thought.
The products we use every day deserve the most attention.
Your gums are some of the most absorbent tissue in your body. Every brush sheds microplastics straight into them. The more I researched, the more questions I had. We brush twice a day, every day, for decades. Yet very few people stop to think about the materials sitting in their mouths every single morning and night. That realization led me to learn more about microplastics, plastic-based bristles, and the materials used in everyday oral care.
I wanted something different. Not another toothbrush with greener packaging or better marketing. I wanted oral care made with carefully selected, non-toxic materials and without unnecessary plastics wherever possible.
That's when OraNorth began.
We didn't set out to build another toothbrush company. We set out to rethink everyday oral care—one product at a time—using better materials, simpler designs, and products we'd genuinely feel good about using every single day.
WHY THE INDUSTRY CHANGED
In 1938, the toothbrush changed forever.
For centuries, toothbrushes were made with natural animal bristles. Then nylon was introduced. It was durable, inexpensive to produce, and easy to manufacture at scale. Before long, it became the new industry standard—and nearly a century later, it still is.
Today, most toothbrushes continue to use plastic bristles, including many marketed as plant-based or eco-friendly. Packaging has changed. Designs have improved. But the material doing the brushing has remained largely the same. That's the standard OraNorth believes is worth questioning.
The problem was never just plastic. It was accepting plastic as the standard.
OUR PHILOSOPHY
What we believe.
Progress over perfection.
You'll never remove every toxic material from your life. Nobody can. Trying to replace everything at once only makes better choices feel impossible. We believe the smartest place to start is with the products you use every day. Focus on the few changes that reduce unnecessary plastic without making your routine harder, then let the rest come later. That isn't doing less. It's choosing what matters most.
Enough with the label games.
“Plant-based” gets printed on products as if it guarantees they're safe. It doesn't. A material can begin with castor beans and still be chemically processed into nylon. “BPA-free” may simply mean another compound, such as BPS, was used instead. And vague terms like “fragrance” can leave more questions than answers.
We don't believe a better-sounding label is enough. We tell you what's in the product, what isn't, and where the trade-offs are. We don't hide behind greenwashing or pretend plant-based automatically means plastic-free or non-toxic. We give you the facts. Then you decide.
You're protecting people who aren't born yet.
This was never just about us. The plastic and chemicals we use today don't simply disappear. They stay in the environment and can affect the world future generations grow up in.
The choices we make now become the normal our children grow up with. So this is about more than having a cleaner bathroom. It's about reducing unnecessary plastic today, so the next generation has less to deal with tomorrow.
